Sports Injury at Tenafly Chiropractic

Rotator Cuff Injuries:  Rotator Cuff syndrome is caused by inflammation, swelling, or even tears in the muscle and tendon injured in rotator cuff syndrome is supraspinatus.  Chiropractic care can use a range of treatments to first address the pain and inflammation of a rotator cuff tear. These may include ultrasound, electrical muscle stimulation and heat and ice treatments. Then chiropractic adjustments and targeted exercises are used to restore mobility and increase range of movement, without having to resort to steroid injections or surgery. After approximately six to eight weeks of treatment most patients are able to resume normal activities.

Tennis Elbow:  Tennis elbow is considered an overuse injury, caused by repetitive, forceful movements of the wrist.  This forces the thumb to move outwards and the palm to move upwards, which shortens the muscles of the forearm.  The pain from tennis elbow generally lasts for about 6 to 12 weeks, but can also persist for years if the problem is not corrected by a chiropractor.  Chiropractors will recommend certain treatment measures to relieve tennis elbow.  The most important is to completely rest the elbow and ice it down to reduce the inflammation.  An elbow brace or strap may be required if the problem continues and total rest is impossible.   Once the pain has subsided, a comprehensive rehabilitation and physical therapy program should be followed to regain strength and range of motion in the elbow and forearm.

Runner’s Knee:  Runner’s Knee occurs when the patella (kneecap) travels too far out to the outer side of your knee and rubs on the bones underneath (femur).  With each step, the bones grind together creating inflammation, pain and swelling.  Because of this, it is important to get an evaluation from a qualified chiropractor to make sure that the Runner’s Knee is causing your pain and that you don’t have another condition.
